Cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is already a luxurious experience, and it's one of our favorite cruise lines when we travel ourselves. We've sailed with NCL more than any other cruise line. All staterooms on their ships are great and provide awesome accommodations. But...what if you could elevate your vacation even further - without paying full price for a suite or balcony stateroom?

That’s where NCL's Upgrade Advantage program comes in. This guide breaks down how it works and what it even means to submit an upgrade request.

Thinking about booking your next Norwegian Cruise Line adventure? We’re here to make it effortless. At Voyage Geeks, we know NCL inside and out — from finding the perfect itinerary to navigating programs like Upgrade Advantage.

Got questions? We’ll get you answers — even if you didn’t book with us!

What Is the Norwegian Cruise Line Upgrade Advantage Program?

The Upgrade Advantage is NCL’s bidding system that allows guests to bid for an upgrade to a higher stateroom category, if invited. Instead of paying the full fare difference, you place a bid (as a cash value) for the upgrade. If your bid is accepted, you’ll be upgraded and charged the bid amount.

How does the upgrade process work?

Receive an Invitation

After booking your cruise with Voyage Geeks, you might receive a direct email invitation to join the Upgrade Advantage program. You can also verify your eligibility through your NCL account and reservation, where an inbox message will appear if you are invited to bid for an upgrade. It's crucial to note that NCL determines who receives an invite based on various factors, including the current ship occupancy. If most staterooms are booked, you are less likely to get an invite. This program is a pleasant surprise, but if you desire a specific room type, we recommend booking it directly to ensure your cruise experience is perfect.

You may receive an email looking like this inviting you to submit a bid for an upgrade.

Evaluate Upgrade Options

Once you click on the email invitation, you'll be directed to a page displaying your current stateroom category and the options available for an upgrade. You will only see the available upgrade target categories. If you're in an Inside stateroom, all options above an Inside cabin will be shown. If you're in a Balcony, you'll see only Club Balconies and higher. If you're already in the Haven, you'll only see Haven categories that are "above" your current category, such as a 2-Bedroom Villa if you're in a more standard Haven stateroom.

Initially, you will encounter this landing page. To begin the bidding process, click the "Request Upgrade" button.

After clicking the button, you will reach the main page where again your current stateroom and reservation details are shown.

You will now see each stateroom upgrade option.

Place Your Bid

Input the amount you're willing to pay per person for the upgrade. Bids are calculated per person for the entire cruise and apply only to the first two guests in the stateroom. Be aware that the slider is quite sensitive, so you may need to carefully maneuver your mouse to select the precise amount you want to bid.

Each stateroom category has a set minimum and maximum bid amount. As you adjust the slider left or right, you'll notice the "speedometer" on the right shifting from Red to Yellow to Green.

Crucially, this assessment of your bid's "quality" is solely determined by the slider's position and the amount you're bidding. Norwegian aims to get you to pay as much as possible. Therefore, more money means more green. We've secured bids at the minimum and missed out on bids in the middle.

A minimum bid selected on the slider and the offer strength indicator showing poor/red
Minimum Bid: Each option has a minimum amount on the slider. Note the Offer Strength indicator shows poor/red.
A maximum bid selected on the slider and the offer strength indicator showing excellent/green
Bid Maximum: Each option has a maximum amount on the slider. Note the Offer Strength indicator is now excellent/green.

There are several key factors to keep in mind when choosing the appropriate bid amount:

  • Consult with your Voyage Geeks travel advisor to determine if placing an upgrade bid is a wise decision. Ensure that your bid does not exceed the current cost of purchasing that stateroom directly. The bidding system does not stop you from potentially "overpaying" in this way.

  • Select an amount you are willing and financially able to pay if your bid is successful.

  • It's impossible to predict which bid amount will be accepted or rejected.

  • Avoid letting the Offer Strength indicator affect your decisions; it's only meant to distract you.

  • You don't have to place a bid for every stateroom type. If you're interested in bidding on a specific category, just submit a bid for that one and leave the rest as "No Offer".

Enter Payment Info

Once you have chosen your bids for each stateroom type, you will proceed to a screen where you can input your payment card details. Keep in mind that your card will only be charged if your bid is accepted, and the charge will occur immediately using the payment information you provide on this screen. You won't be able to alter the payment once the upgrade is confirmed.

Wait for Notification

You will receive a notification at any time up to the day of departure if your bid is accepted. If you are notified before the departure day, your room will be updated in your reservation, and your boarding e-docs will be revised. If your upgrade occurs on the day of departure, you will be informed, and you will receive your new keycards at the check-in desk for embarkation. In very rare cases, your upgrade might be processed after you have already boarded the ship. In such instances, you will need to visit the Guest Services desk onboard to get your new key cards.

If your bid is not successful, you might or might not receive a notification informing you of this. Our experiences in this regard have been varied.

Important Details to Know

  • Non-Refundable: Once accepted, your bid is final and non-refundable.

  • No Cabin Selection: You can’t choose the exact location or features of the upgraded cabin - it’s based solely on availability.

  • Keep Existing Promotions: You retain any promotions already on your booking, but no new ones are added with the upgrade. This includes extra Latitudes points — normally, direct bookings in Suites and Haven staterooms qualify for an extra point per night, but this additional point is not awarded with an upgrade.

  • Group Travel: Each reservation is considered individually. If you're traveling with others, there's no guarantee all bids will be accepted or that upgraded cabins will be near each other.

  • Modifications: You can modify or cancel your bid up to 5 hours before departure, as long as it hasn’t been accepted.

What Happens If You’re Upgraded?

If your bid is accepted:

  • Your stateroom is upgraded to the higher category.

  • Your credit card is charged the bid amount.

  • You enjoy the perks of the upgraded cabin—like more space, better views, or exclusive amenities.

If your bid is not accepted:

  • You keep your original cabin.

  • You’re not charged anything.
